I’m sure the parents who read this can relate that once you become a parent, the one thing that’s constant is the presence of your child/children. When you see the child for the first time, hold him/her for the first time, kiss him/her for the first time, its a whole new beginning. Life as you know it, has changed eternally. You are now responsible for this being that has been gifted to you by the Almighty. From that point on, your children are a fixture in your life. You cannot escape it, and if you manage a fleeting moment where they are not there, your heart aches for their presence, even when we are reminded of the screaming and the tantrums, and all the other “wonderful” things kids do that drive us bonkers
Today the kids were with Aisha. I had [...]

Life is a Highway

First things first. Click on the “play” triangle here: [audio Life Is A Highway] (Don’t worry. It won’t destroy your computer. It should eventually start playing a song, so make sure your computer’s volume is set to a good level. Come on, do it for Finn! This blog post is just soooo much better if you have this song playing! And a quick apology too … I’m not as blog saavy yet as my techno-cousin Cat, who has whole musical albums playing as background music on her blog!)
Now, if this were a Jeopardy game, I’d use the following questions as my “answers” to this “answer” – Finn’s current obsession.
The actual Jeopardy round would look or sound something like this:
Answer: Finn’s current obsession.
Question: What, as of 2004, was 46,837 miles long?
or …
Answer: Finn’s current obsession.
Question: What came into being as a result of President Dwight D. Eisenhowser signing the Federal-Aid [...]

What Makes Me Happy
Tagged Under : life
I am happy.
I am a happy person with a great life. And no, it’s not dependent on the price of gasoline.
Here’s what’s currently making me happy:
I didn’t have to work today.
Dinner tonight was healthy, cheap and well received, (pizza from scratch).
I did most of the dishes, but no one cares if I finish up tomorrow.
Both my kids had friends over after school today, and there was only minimal whining about no video games.
My 12-year-old has been drawing more since I took away said video games.
I have four great movies from the library right now, and three whole weeks to watch them. (Juno, Charlie Bartlett, Extras: Series Finale and Star Trek: Enterprise, the Second Season.)
I gleaned a perfect Swiffer today from a neighbor’s garbage pile. I can use it with towel rags, which work perfectly.
My husband just got his dream job, which he’s been working towards for eight years.
The rock wall in my [...]

In today’s world, where appearances matter the most, it becomes not just important, but in fact mandatory to look you best. The pace of my life has changed a bit lately. Things had been going along at such a stressful and hectic pace for a while and now things seem, well… good? Peaceful? I can actually remember the things I like about day to day life: waking up before the alarm clock or my son and getting a half- hour semi-cuddle in with my husband, walking around aimlessly with my son each morning, baking bread, reading an entire book in a day- today I made two pairs of earrings on a whim. My son and I ran around in the wind. I let him make his own pizza. We turned up the music too loud and danced around. This is all very good stuff. Soon I will be back to the 9-5 thing and he will be in school and we will remember when we had all of the time in [...]

Fly Me Back Home
While moving home was something I would have preferred not to do, it was in my head the “only real choice” I had. For one, my dad had given me an offer I couldn’t refuse, enticing me with the capabilities to pursue a lifelong goal - to run my own business. The training and help that he would provide would be an invaluable learning experience and really, all other options paled in comparison. In a sentimental light, I’ve always wanted to be able to learn from his wisdom and expertise. I’ve always admired him and his path towards success and he has accomplished so much in his lifetime. I had and still do have big dreams of continuing the family legacy and improving upon it.
On the other hand, things aren’t quite working out in the way I would’ve hoped. While I am learning a lot in the [...]

Hope Fades

…the next verse of the popular song “Who Needs Soap Operas When You Have Life?”…
When last we left our hero
, he had seen glimmers of hope after sitting down and talking with The Wife about a potential negotiated settlement to us splitting up. I had presented, thoughtfully and slowly, what I thought was a very fair settlement agreement. The Wife, also thoughtful, did not reject it outright and even seemed to be coming to grips that that may be a less-painful way forward than going to court.
Well, so much for that idea. The Wife got it in her mind that, if I die ‘early’*, she would be left—her words—‘destitute’. Wow. I tried to point out that her disability insurance plus her interest from her investments would put her earning not much less than the average American household… without even considering any alimony payments from me (which, yeah, would cease if [...]
