Empower Me Already

Happy New Year to all! I wish for you many adventures in 2009 that will inspire you and take you into new, fulfilling directions.
We have just finished up our first complete calendar year in Bear River and we’ve had so many “first time” experiences that we’ve lost count. Mostly this is due to living in a rural community for first time. The amount of changes would be the same for a Bear Riverite moving to Toronto. Well, minus the fresh air, tidal river, trees, tractors and ticks.

It was the first time I ever saw a tree milled on the spot.

Two weeks have passed since our trees blew down, taking out the hydro pole and ripping live wires from our new/old house and WE STILL DON’T HAVE POWER!! GRRRRRR!
There have been many calls to and from Nova Scotia Power and consults with our wonderful electrician and the bottom line is that they won’t [...]

Prologue; dedicated to my brother Jim

The Pacific coast air was stinging my face.  “Jim you sure you want to hold Omar in that front pack the whole time on the beach?”  Jim tenderly laid his hand on Omar’s blue cap, arching his back so he could get a better look at Omar’s face.  Omar as usual was content in a front pack. As long as he was attached, he was at peace with the world.  “No problemo Jeff, I enjoy this more than you could ever know”. “Great” I chuckled in relief, “thank God he isn’t on my back.” Jim turned briskly on his heels heading for the Newport Beach’s main street.  Hey Jen, lets have some fish and chips at Mo’s.” Jim proposed.  “Cool” I smiled.  We headed down the bustling streets past tourist shops selling Sea Gull statues with moss under their skinny legs.
As we trotted along Jim put his arm around [...]

antara PUTUSS dan kami…

bangun pagi-pagi, ke sekolah, ke kampus, ke kantor kita pergi…
tapi oh my God traffic jam lagi…
but you don’t have to worry…

Bloggl

Time after time, people ask us, “How can I get into the Green Guy Lounge way of thinking, being and speaking. In an attempt to satisfy this outcry for more and more things “Green Guy”, we’ve compiled the following glossary of Loungespeak.
In the interest of brevity and as an introduction, we’ve limited the scope of this glossary (Gloggl as you’ll see). It is our sincere hope that this will, in some small way, satisfy, if only temporarily, your cravings for all things GGL.
• Gloggl – glossary of Green Guy Lounge terms. Pay attention. You should have already known that one if you read the introduction properly.
• Foggls – Friends of the Green Guy Lounge.
• Bloggl – The weblog, or blog, of the Green Guy Lounge.
• The Croggl – The Creator without whose seed of inspiration, the world would be a little less green and little less loungy.
• Woggl – Will of the [...]

I Dotta Bad Toad

…but at least I can breathe now — somewhat.
The past weekend was apparently NOT meant for breathing — and lack of breathing sends me into near panic attacks.
I hate it when my head is sooo clogged up~!
This happened last January. I told DH it was all those southern Illinois germs I encountered during our Christmas visit to his family, so I wouldn’t be going there any more.
I am only half-kidding.

*******************************************************************************************************
Of course I was sufficiently recovered to go in to work today, toting in my lotioned Kleenex and honey/lemon cough drops.
Go figure.
Oh, that’s right – I don’t have sick days, so I go in sick. Or take a vacation day. Waaaay too early to start whittling away at those.
Part of my “other duties as assigned” is to give out change from the money box.  I usually make the hapless folks bringing me their twenty-dollar bills stand there and listen to my [...]

on my heart.

There’s been a lot on my heart lately. And yes, I used the word heart instead of mind intentionally. There’s always a lot on my mind. But it’s different when it’s on the heart. I know when it gets to the heart because I can’t shake it and it even finds it’s way into my prayer life. So when I “have a lot on my heart” it’s a rare thing.
It’s been mostly people on my heart. Old friends who I haven’t seen in a long time. My cadre girls. My family. I’ve been feeling the burden (a good kind of burden) for people.
The other thing on my heart is the nations. I’ve been feeling a push to pray for the nations more than I have before. I’ve also realized that I haven’t been paying attention to world news like I used to…and I need to fix that. Like I said last week, Mondays here at Brilliantly Redeemed are going to [...]

True. . .

#6 is becoming acquainted with the difference between scientifically correct terminology and generally accepted terminology. Out of the blue this evening, he mused:
You know, there really isn’t such a thing as cold. But you don’t really want to say, “There’s the absence of heat outside.”

“i’m going to miss you. very much.”- ode to my mother

words spoken by my mother, who i dearly miss.
i returned to gainesville last night and was struck by how novel the town appeared after just 3 weeks of being away.  as i walked into my apartment, i felt like i was moving in again.  the hallway still contained its signature “new building” scent, which brought back a flood of memories from the previous semester which i had already forgotten.  thank goodness for memory stimuli like these, without which so many memories would be lost to the dark recesses of forgottenness in our minds. somehow, scents and sounds have the power of rekindling images that would otherwise remain buried in the stockpile of assorted images in our mind, on the verge of being forgotten.  how intriguing.  if i were scientifically inclined, i would study neuroscience and research sensory stimuli, but i have neither the patience nor scientific knowledge for [...]

Has Rosemeadow forgotten Dean?

Once upon a time, there was a big lake that crossed two suburbs, Ambarvale and Rosemeadow. Surrounded by ticky-tacky public housing, the murky lake was home to eels and ducks that those local residents who couldn’t afford the cost of movies for entertainment would feed with stale bread. The children of the areas would group up with friends and hang out around the lake, playing in the marshes and poking random things found floating in the reeds with sticks.
Until one day a few kids found a suitcase floating in the lake.
They dug it out, opened it and discovered what they thought was a dead pig - but it wasn’t. As time and months of police investigation would reveal, the kids had found a child. A 2-year-old named Dean Shillingsworth who had been beaten to death by his own mother.
If truth is stranger than fiction, then this news story was. However, [...]
